Farm Party Barnyard Cupcakes

A few weeks back we were paid a visit by a lovely woman named Andrea and her little boy Chase.   Chase was about to celebrate his second birthday, and his current obsession was farm animals.  Andrea had been to a few bakeries and asked them to create coordinating cupcakes and a small cake for him to match a balloon she had found as inspiration.  She told us she had a hard time finding a baker who was willing to take on the task- which was music to our ears!  We love doing custom work, especially when the reward involves seeing a smiling child.  These creations were to be featured at his party held at a local apple orchard - how fun!

Here is the balloon that was provided to us for inspiration:

We knew right away we wanted to create something 3-D for Chase, and decided that topping cupcakes with cake pop animals would be the most fun way to do it.  We scoured our candy supply for sheep faces, pig snouts, chicken mohawks and cow legs.  Next up was deciding how to create the 6" cake.   Our assistant baker Melanie lives on a goat farm and insisted that we must have a barn as our centerpiece.  She carved up a few red velvet cupcakes and even piped on some lovely wooden trim.  We found some cute pinwheel salt water taffy to act as haybales, then finished everything off with some sprouting grass and a pretzel fence.

It was quite an undertaking, but the smile on Chase's parents face when they came to pick everything up made it all worth it!  We can't wait to see the photos of him devouring all of his animals.  We hope you like it too!

charlottesville weddings take the cake

Posted on April 27, 2012 by tara koenig | 0 Comments

it wasn't too long ago that i was a bride myself, and i remember wishing there was a way i could pull all of my favorite things together to share with everyone i loved on the big day. we have a lot of regular customers who are in the process of planning their weddings, and they tell us that while they love our cupcakes, they just aren't sure they want to forego the traditional wedding cake.  well, they asked and we listened.   we are excited to announce that we will now offer traditional tiered wedding cakes.  we recently had the opportunity to work for the super talented gay beery of a pimento catering on a tiered spice cake with cream cheese frosting for a wedding at king family vineyards.  the small tasting cake was accompanied by 140 regular sized cupcakes, and provided the bride and groom the opportunity for the traditional "cake cutting" photo they wished to have in their album.  please contact us for a tasting appointment for more information and pricing. and if you aren't familiar with gay's culinary prowess, time to check her out...

Baking a Difference

Posted on April 24, 2012 by Yumi Almendras | 0 Comments

In case you missed Saturday's first ever bake off event at sweethaus, here are some morsels for you to munch on:

sweethaus and the UVA Baking Club joined forces to create Baking a Difference, a bake off headed by UVA's Megan McFarland. Megan is a third year Biology and Elementary Education major at UVA, as well as the president of the Baking Club.  She is a member of Kappa Delta Sorority, and also works part-time at sweethaus! She is the head cake pop creator, so you can thank her for those adorable delicious treats!

Megan shares that she and sweethaus' founder/owner Tara Koenig have been talking about joining forces for an event since they met last September. The clever name, Baking a Difference, came to Megan one day when she was brainstorming ideas for the event. She feels proud of the coined name saying, "I'm usually never punny!". Tara was happy to host the event in the sweethaus parking lot, and donated giftcards as prizes for the winners.

The proceeds for Baking a Difference are going towards offering free baking classes for middle-school girls involved in the Young Women Leaders Program through UVA.

Here's an excerpt of a short interview with Megan McFarland:

Are you happy with the turnout?

Yes I'm really happy with the turnout! The UVA Baking Club is a relatively new club on grounds, so the turnout on Saturday was just really exciting to see!  We raised over $250 in two hours, which I think is really impressive!

What's the feedback from the participants and tasters?

We had 7 different desserts entered into the bake off, and all contestants seemed to really enjoy themselves!  Tasters had a great time as well, and said how voting was a tough, as each dessert was so delicious!  The tasters were voting for a first place and honorable mention.  First place went to the Vanilla Bean Cupcake with Vanilla bean frosting and Strawberry Sauce.  Honorable Mention went to Jizzle Bars, which are chocolate and peanut butter bars with a secret ingredient: potato chips!

Any future plans for a similar event?

Tara and I have already talked about doing the event again next year, and have started brainstorming ways to make it an even greater success!  It's been a blast to work with a local business like sweethaus, and I think this event has a lot of potential in the future!  What I like about it most is that it integrates the University and student life with the rest of Charlottesville and the townspeople.

Other general info about Baking Club:

We meet every other Friday at Newcomb Dining hall to bake.  Newcomb gives us access to their kitchen as well as ingredients, and most of the time we bake for other organization's fundraisers/philanthropies. For example, we donated cakes to Relay For Life's cake walk).  We hope Baking A Difference will be our annual philanthropy in the spring!

So there you go, a fun-filled inaugural bake off at sweethaus.  Stay tuned for the next bake off event planned for Fall 2012.  There's always a reason to bake for a difference after all!

Fighting the 'Big C' one cupcake at a time...

Posted on December 14, 2011 by tara koenig | 0 Comments

I am very honored to work with UVA's chapter of "Relay for Life" to help them reach their goal of raising $100k by April 2012.

Relay For Life is a national organization that represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day, cancer will be eliminated.  Having lost my only sister, Nicole, to cancer when she was just 34 years old, I am often struck by how many people I come into contact with have also suffered the loss of a loved one from cancer.

From January through April, we will have purple tinted buttercream frosting in honor of Relay for Life's purple ribbon.  We will donate 20% of the purchase price, or 50 cents, for every purple cupcake purchased.

Considering finding a charity to work with in 2012? Fighting cancer by eating cupcakes?  Now THAT'S an easy New Year's resolution to keep!
